Name of owners: Harold and Michele Schaus. He has owned the roller skating rink since 2004. Harold traces his time there to 1975, when as a teen, the 1980 Union High School graduate began working for Earl Partridge. Schaus acquired the business, which previously had miniature golf, from Ed Howard.

Why bring back miniature golf now? Someone had all the objects in their pole barn. We redid the wishing well, the windmill, the pinwheel, the Eiffel Tower, the loop-the-loop and the totem pole. I’ve got a trestle bridge I’m working on a puppy dog whose leg goes up and down. There’s also a giant jack-in-the-box. Nine of the 18 holes opened for play at 7 p.m. May 25, with a grand opening Sunday. We have built new fairways with curves and elevated greens to go with the obstacles. The 10th hole was on the parade float Memorial Day. We’ve been out here late nights for the last couple weeks. We bought the lot March 1, then found out we had to get permits from Keeler Township, even though this was an existing miniature golf course. Final approval from the zoning board took until April 24.

Date business opened: The skating rink has been a Sister Lakes institution for 84 years.

Hours? For summer, we change our hours. About the third week of June we’ll pick up Tuesday and Thursday for vacation season and run that until about the third week of August. When Chicago schools go back, it’s deserted. We skate at night because we’re not air conditioned. Most roller rinks are not. I checked into it, and it would have been like buying the building over again, $100,000.”
