Two Southwestern Michigan College students were honored Monday night by the college’s Board of Trustees.
Joel Adu and Laura Tennison, both of whom will graduate with honors from SMC on May 5, received award certificates from SMC’s President David Mathews for their representation on the 2012 All-Michigan Academic Team. Both students are members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Adu, originally from Ghana in West Africa and a 2010 graduate of Berrien Springs High School, will graduate from SMC with an associate degree in science with an emphasis in biology.
His plans include getting a bachelor’s degree in health science and a master’s degree as a physician’s assistant. Ultimately, he says he would like to become a physician.
Tennison, who is a 2006 graduate of Country Side Academy in Benton Harbor and a resident of Eau Claire, will graduate from SMC with an associate in Applied Science in Information Technology – Networking.
She plans to attend Ferris State University @ SMC to earn a bachelor’s of science in Computer Information Technology. Currently, Tennison is working in SMC’s bookstore as a PC technician and is an active member in the business club.
Both students were honored recently during the annual Phi Theta Kappa Awards luncheon in Lansing as part of the 2012 All-Michigan Academic Team.
The students were selected based on academic achievement, community service involvement, and leadership accomplishment.
The state academic teams, a division of the Academic All-American Team for community, technical and junior college students, is an international program sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa, USA TODAY and the American Association of Community Colleges.
All-State Team members receive special recognition including medallions, certificates and scholarships.
