Max Rusher

Jan. 27, 1930-April 1, 2024

Max Allen Rusher, a cherished family man, respected dentist, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024, in South Bend, Indiana. Born on Jan. 27, 1930, in St. Charles, Michigan, to the late Merle and Nora (Crane) Rusher, Max’s journey through life was marked by dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
A proud graduate of St. Charles High School’s class of 1947, Max displayed an early affinity for science and a desire to help others. His academic pursuits led him to Loma Linda, California, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery. With his degree in hand, Max returned to the Midwest, where he would establish a long and distinguished career as a dentist in the Niles area. His gentle touch and kind demeanor earned him the trust and friendship of countless patients over the decades.
Max’s life was rich with love and partnership. He was predeceased by his first wife, Vera (McKeage) Rusher, who passed away 17 years ago, and his second wife, Pat (Balos) Rusher, who left this world 2 years prior to his own departure. Together with Vera, he raised two sons, Rand and Scott Rusher, who remember their father as a pillar of strength and a fountain of wisdom. Max found joy in his role as a grandfather to Scott Rusher and Jared (Tiffany) Rusher, and he took immense pride in his great-grandchildren, Draden, Jackson, Chynna, Jaeden, Jordyn, and Amani.
His brother, Jack Rusher, also preceded him in death, leaving Max as a cherished memory in the hearts of those who knew him. His family will hold dear the lessons he imparted and the love he shared, ensuring that his legacy endures through generations. Max’s professional life was not only defined by his work as a dentist but also by his active involvement within the community.
Max’s family will host a memorial service at the Niles Westside Seventh-day Adventist Church on Monday, April 29, 2024, beginning at 1 p.m., with a time of visitation beginning at Noon.
