Cass County honors law enforcement

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office took time out Tuesday to honor a fallen deputy and celebrate National Police Week, thanking those who have served and still serve.

It was almost 12 years ago that Deputy Shane Britton was killed in the line of duty. During National Police Week, May 13-19, the sheriff’s office held a special memorial ceremony for Britton, as well as honoring law enforcement officials past and present. Cass County Honor Guard presented the colors, followed by words from Sheriff Joseph Underwood.

“I’m glad that everyone here could take the time to celebrate and remember those who serve us,” Underwood said to the small crowd who gathered around Britton’s memorial in front of the department.

Capt. Richard Affriseo spoke of Britton warmly.

“He served us proudly and with honor,” Affriseo said.

Chaplain Mike Owen provided a short sermon on what it means to serve as a police officer, followed by taps with the honor guard.

Underwood agreed with Owen’s comments during the ceremony, stating how important it is for us to remember those who have strived to protect local communities.

“Sometimes we only get to see the negative side of things,” Underwood said. “It’s nice to come out and see that people care and appreciate what law enforcement does.”
