BROOKLYN — Due to the overwhelming success of a similar ticket package in 2012, Michigan International Speedway and five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson will again offer a special ticket offer just for children.

The track has teamed with Johnson for a specially priced $48 ticket offer which includes one adult ticket, one ticket for any child 12 years or younger, a Q&A session with Johnson and a Sunday scanner rental for the Quicken Loans 400 on Father’s Day, June 16 and the Pure Michigan 400 on Aug. 18.

“I had a lot of fun interacting with the kids last year. They all asked some great questions,” said Johnson, who has a two-year-daughter Genevieve. “MIS had a great turnout and I am excited to return in 2013 to meet even more kids and young NASCAR fans.”

This package sold out last year in June and in August due to its popularity, so fans should not wait to purchase. This ticket offer was launched when tickets went on sale and most fans renewed.

Johnson has been supportive of the track’s activities and initiatives for the kids. Also in 2012, Johnson was named honorary president of the MIS Kids Club — and he continues to serve today.

Track President Roger Curtis is happy to have Johnson’s support for a special ticket package.

“Jimmie Johnson reached out to us to see how he could become more interactive with the kids and help us sell race tickets,” Curtis said. “We have taken great pride in growing our activities for the children who come to the races and Jimmie is an important part of that plan. We are happy he has agreed to make another appearance for us. He’s a great champion of our sport.”

MIS has prided itself in making the race a family affair. Young NASCAR fans are the future.

Besides its racing activities, MIS hosts a number of events for youth year-round.

The month of May will see numerous students of all levels descend on MIS. It gets started with Track and Explore, a joint partnership between MIS and Adrian College to introduce students to the science. The program sees young schoolchildren touring MIS with Adrian College science students to learn about nature and the racetrack.

On May 3-5, Square One Education Network will be at MIS as students in K-12 learn how to integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Then, nearly 2,000 students representing about 120 registered teams from around the world will compete in one of the most prestigious of the SAE Collegiate Design Series events on May 9-11.

The racing season ends with the Michigan High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2.
