Olympian to answer Merritt students’ inquiries

If you could ask a member of the United States Olympic Team one question, what would it be?

Students at Brandywine’s Merritt Elementary School are about to find out.

Officials from the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center chose Merritt Elementary to participate in the center’s ongoing Kids Ask Questions program, which continues in March.

Sarah-Kate Masters, of the United States Olympic Committee, said one elementary school in each of the 50 states was asked to submit five questions they would like answered by a member of the U.S. Olympic Team. One question from each school will be chosen and answered on video.

Merritt Elementary was selected based on the recommendation of Colin Smith, a former Merritt student living in Colorado.

“The staff was pretty excited when I told them about it because the Olympics is such a wonderful thing,” said Karen Weimer, Merritt Elementary principal.

Each class at Merritt was asked to submit one question and Weimer helped choose the top five, which were sent to the Olympic Committee.

Masters said Merritt Elementary question would be answered sometime in the middle of March.

“We are trying to get kids involved and get them excited for the London 2012 Olympics,” Masters said.

Kids Ask Questions videos can be viewed at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center’s blog at csotcathletelife.blogspot.com.

This isn’t the first time Merritt Elementary has been involved in the Olympics. Former teacher Anne Garrett carried the Olympic torch in South Bend  years ago.

Inquiring students want to know

Merritt Elementary School students submitted the following questions to be answered by a member of the United States Olympics Team:

n How do you get ready the morning of the race/competition?

• What do you need to eat to be a good swimmer? And do you drink milk?

•Who would be the proudest of their efforts?

•When did you start training as an Olympian, and who inspired you to become one?

• Do you work out every day?
