Lakeland HealthCare hires new physicians

Lakeland HealthCare recently welcomed several physicians to its medical staff.

Psychologist Jamie Birris is seeing patients at Lakeland Cancer Specialists, located within the Marie Yeager Cancer Center in St. Joseph. She has a range of training and experience helping individuals cope with the psychological impact of cancer.

Prior to Birris joining Lakeland HealthCare, she worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill. Her responsibilities included guiding cancer and organ transplant patients through each phase of their illness, assessments, consultations, support services and treatment.

Birris earned her master’s degree and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is a member of the American Psychological Association.

Thomas Birris, gastroenterologist, is seeing patients at Great Lakes Gastroenterology in St. Joseph. Birris earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition and his iInternal medicine residency at Loyola University and Hines Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Chicago.

Birris is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American College of Gastroenterology, American College of Physicians, and the American Gastroenterological Association.

Ryan Daily, MD, Radiologist, is board-certified and is Lakeland’s third fellowship-trained Interventional Radiologist. Dr. Daily treats patients at the newly established Interventional Radiology Clinic located within Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph as well as patients at the Niles and St. Joseph hospitals.

Daily, who is fluent in Spanish, completed his Interventional Radiology Fellowship at the University of Florida in Jacksonville. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed his residency in Radiology at the University of Miami. He is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology. He is a member of the American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, and the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Obstetrician and gynecologist Meghan Murphy is seeing patients at the Center for Women’s Health at Southwestern Medical Clinic in Niles. Murphy earned her doctoral degree in osteopathic medicine at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She also worked as a clinical instructor at the university. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Sparrow Health System in Lansing.

Jonathan Steen, a family medicine physician, is seeing patients at Southwestern Medical Clinic in Niles.

Steen earned his doctoral degree in osteopathic medicine at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he went on to work as a clinical instructor. He completed his residency in family medicine at Sparrow Health System in Lansing. Steen, who is fluent in Spanish, has served on several mission trips to Belize, Guatemala and Mexico.

Justin Sybesma, an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, is seeing patients at Southwest Michigan Center for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in St. Joseph and at Lakeland Orthopaedics in Niles.

Sybesma completed a fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology and reconstruction surgery at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. In 2009, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at McLaren Regional Medical Center through the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in Flint.

Sybesma earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Michigan Orthopaedic Society, and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
