Weather has always played a part in the five previous Kameron Belew Memorial Golf Outings.

But Saturday was different — sort of.

While it didn’t rain on the sixth annual golf outing at Spruce Ridge, strong storms did roll through the area shortly after the event wrapped up.

“It has always rained,” June Belew said.

Some 61 golfers took to the links Saturday to help raise approximately $3,200 which provides scholarships for both under graduate and graduate studies for area students.

“We have given out $28,000 in scholarships so far,” Belew said. “We have given scholarships to students from Dowagiac, Niles and Berrien Springs. They are available to all students in our area. They just need to apply for the scholarship.”

You can get an application for the scholarship by calling the Belews at (574) 274-9435.

The outing, which has been at Spruce Ridge since its inception, is held the first Saturday in August each year.

Kameron Belew was born in 1987 to Keith and June Belew. He had one sister, Kiele.

He excelled at football at Dowagiac Union High School where he was a two-time all-conference selection at middle linebacker for the Chieftains.

His life was cut short Dec. 31, 2006 when he was involved in a car accident.

His family decided to honor his memory and also help students by holding the golf outing and establishing the Kameron Belew Scholarship.

The outing awards cash prizes for first, second and third place as well as door prizes and contests such as the longest drive and closest to the pin.

This year’s winning team was Jim Eckman, Robert Sink, Murphy Tobin and Jordan Juday.
