True launches write-in campaign for supervisor

Keeler Township Supervisor Joseph S. True is mounting a write-in campaign to retain the seat he lost in the Aug. 7 Republican primary to former supervisor William J. Kays, 372-327.

“I am doing a write-in campaign to continue as supervisor in Keeler,” True said Wednesday. “I just have too much support to not try. There has been a terrific outpouring of support.”

Voters in the Van Buren County township recalled Kays in the August 2011 primary, 324 yes to 320 no.

On Nov. 8, 2011, True, with 269, outpolled four other candidates for the partial supervisor’s term.

True, a lifelong county resident, spent 30 years on the sheriff’s department as a deputy, including the last eight years with the car Keeler contracted.

“I wanted to be part of the township’s future,” said True, who saw himself running for trustee until it appeared there would be no supervisor candidates.

“I have no issues with time constraints.”

During his time as supervisor, True, who is also Pokagon Township zoning administrator, said he accomplished drain and roadwork and made contracts for tree removal.

“All that stuff should be put out to bid,” he said. “Government needs to be open and transparent.”

True also emphasized constituent service, “getting back to people and not making them wait for a response. I made it a point to call back the same day.”
