Crash kills one in Jefferson Township

A one-vehicle traffic crash near the intersection of Calvin Hill Street and North Shore Drive in Jefferson Township has resulted in a fatality.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident that occurred at approximately 8:29 a.m. Saturday.

The only occupant in the vehicle was the driver identified as David M. Wenger, 52, of  Goshen, Ind., who was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Wenger vehicle was traveling westbound on Calvin Hill Street when the driver failed to negotiate a curve near the intersection of Calvin Hill and North Shore Drive, leaving the roadway and striking a tree before coming to rest in a ravine.

Seat belts were worn by the driver and it is unknown if alcohol was a factor at this time. There was also heavy fog at the time of the accident as well.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Penn Township Fire Department, Life Care Ambulance Service and the Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Department.

The accident remains under investigation.
