Ladies of the community will find a warm, welcoming atmosphere at Hong’s USA Taekwondo, Habgido, Gumdo, Inc. in Niles, where the traditional Korean martial art is taught.

In addition to learning self-defense, physical fitness is encouraged to all students.

“Within four months of attending classes two or three times a week, I have lost approximately 25 pounds and eight inches off my waistline” Stephanie Timm, 30, of Niles said. “I knew I would never be successful at a gym. I wanted structure, direction and a challenge, and I found that here at Hong’s. Grandmaster Hong and the rest of the staff are very friendly, kind, encouraging and supportive of my goals to become more physically fit after going through several medical conditions and surgery the last year. The other students welcomed me and I immediately felt like I belonged.”

Students are taught the five tenents of Taekwondo — Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit.

“In addition to my physical success, I have gained a renewed sense of self-belief and determination in the fact that I can face the challenges set in front of me. I am also more confident in myself, as I now have a solid foundation of self-defense skills and know how to defend myself if challenged” Timm said. “I encourage other ladies of our community to do what I did, come out and try a class. I enjoyed it so much. It was fun, everyone was respectful and supported me to do my best, whatever level it was. I have lost several pant sizes in a few short months and I can’t wait to see what will happen as I continue to learn. It’s the time of year when everyone sets new resolutions. There are classes for all ages, skills and fitness levels in a family environment. The gym is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
