Second defendant in $190,000 heist sentenced

CASSOPOLIS — The second of three men charged with stealing more than $190,000 from an Edwardsburg business in July learned his sentence Friday in Cass County Circuit Court.

Judge Michael Dodge sentenced Richard Mroz, 19, of Union, to a minimum of 3 1/2 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections. It was the same sentence Dodge handed down to co-defendant Joseph Rodick on April 26.

Mroz pleaded guilty March 25 to several charges stemming from the July 6 theft of cash and property from Village Automatics. The most serious charge, conspiracy safe breaking, carries a maximum penalty of life or any number of years. The sentencing guideline for Mroz on that offense was 29 to 57 months.

Mroz and his co-defendants stole around $180,000 in cash from a safe on Village Automatics property and lifted several guns, computers and other items. Mroz and his co-defendants are responsible for paying restitution in the amount of $194,861.38.

The victim said the cash was his life savings.

Mroz has credit for 123 days served.
