ACTION to host annual Good Friday service

For the forth year, Dowagiac’s ACTION ministry network will pool its resources together to host a nondenominational Good Friday service at 7 p.m. at Federated Covenant Church.

This year, the clergy will present a special program for attendees, a four-part dramatization of the story of Jesus’ crucifixion entitled “Journey to the Cross.” Approximately 12 people will be performing in the drama, which will also feature music and scripture readings, said organizer the Rev. Jerri Porter.

This is the first time that this program has been featured at one of ACTION’s Good Friday services, Porter said. Two years ago, the service featured a Service of Tenebrae, or “shadows,” which dates back to ancient Rome.

Planning of the service has been handled by a committee of church leaders within the organization, including Porter, pastor of Conner Mayo AME Church; Rob Lowe, pastor of Federated Covenant Church; Beth Reum, pastor of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church; and David Price, pastor of Dowagiac’s First United Methodist Church.

The collaboration between the clergy of various churches gives the service a unique quality that isn’t found in most Good Sunday gatherings, Porter said.

“We review different aspects from the scripture, and we gather ideas from the different denominations on how they celebrate,” she said. “This is the first time we are venturing into this aspect. That’s one of the good things about the service, we can try different things each year.”

In prior years, the Good Friday service has drawn upwards of 70 people to the church, Porter said. This year, ACTION hopes to attract 100 or more visitors for worship on Friday, the pastor added.

Service begins at 7 p.m., and is expected to end around an hour and half later, Porter said.

Federated Covenant Church is located at 202 Center St. in Dowagiac. The entire community is invited. For more information, contact ACTION at 269-782-0000 or online at actiondowagiac.com.
