Salvation Army, Toys for Tots donations accepted at Council on Tourism

The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots are teaming up with the Four Flags Area Council on Tourism to host a “Day of Giving” noon to 7 p.m. Dec. 16. Local residents are encouraged to stop by with donations for the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots. Among  needed items are unwrapped toys, adult clothing, nonperishable food goods, toiletries and items for newborns and infants.

This year, the tourism office will also be collecting donations for the Veterans Home in Niles and the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek.

Melinda Michael, Four Flags Area Council on Tourism director, said, with many service men and women returning home, now is the time to help.

“We have many homeless veterans who walk the streets of our communities and have many needs,” she said.

“Today’s veterans are returning home from their tour of duty to a struggling economy and lack of employment.”

Suggested items for donation for veterans include postage stamps, envelopes, puzzle books, magazines, books, toiletries, pens, pencils, playing cards and clothing of all types and sizes.

Next week’s event will feature local musician Kevin Blair and a visit from Santa.

All of the donations collected at the Day of Giving will stay in Berrien and Cass counties, Michael said.

Those unable to attend the Day of Giving can  bring  donations to  the tourism office,  404 E. Main St.,  any time before that  date, Michael said. For information,  call (269) 684-7444 or email info@ fourflagsarea.org.
