Chieftain soccer advances to district semifinals

BERRIEN SPRINGS — The Dowagiac soccer team wasted little time jumping on host Berrien Springs in the opening round of the Division 3 district tournament Tuesday.

The Chieftains scored five goals in the first 12 minutes en route to an 8-0 win over the Shamrocks.

Dowagiac (3-14-2) advances to Thursday’s semifinal at Fennville.

The win snapped an 11-match losing streak for the Chieftains.

Fennville defeated South Haven 4-1 to advance to the semifinals.

Daniela Morales and Anayda Lucio both scored two goals, while Lucio also had three assists for the Chieftains, who led 8-0 at halftime.

There was no second half due to the mercy rule.

Magali Cruz added a goal and an assist, while Anna Medina and Katie Hurrle, both freshmen, scored their first career goals.

Logan McMeeken also had a goal. Cali Rank contributed a pair of assists.

“An excellent start to the state tournament for us,” Dowagiac coach Ryan Haines said. “At this point it is win and advance. Some good things happened today, a lot of the younger players scored today to build their confidence. Overall we are happy with today’s result.”
