Upton camp decries ‘false ads’

Officials in U.S. Rep. Fred Upton’s office say a television advertisement released Tuesday by the Club for Growth that labels him as a “liberal” is an attempt to “twist the truth.”
Meghan Kolassa, press secretary and senior policy advisor for Upton, released a statement Wednesday in response to the ad.
“DC liberal groups say Fred is too conservative and DC conservative groups say Fred is too liberal, and all are pouring in tens of thousands of dollars for ads that twist the truth,” she said.
The ad is running on cable TV in Upton’s district, which includes Niles, and criticizes Upton’s support of congressional earmarks, the bank bailout and raising of the debt limit.
Kolassa clarified Upton’s stance in a press release.
“Club for Growth is going after Fred for the use of earmarks. However, Fred voted to ban earmarks. Fred has been a leader trying to stop job killing legislation like the president’s healthcare law; he has protected nearly 4 million jobs from being destroyed by excessive regulations, and save taxpayers $90 billion; and he was an original cosponsor of the bipartisan constitutional amendment, which would prohibit federal spending from exceeding receipts for every given fiscal year.”
While Club for Growth hasn’t endorsed a candidate, it did meet in November with Jack Hoogendyk, who ran against Upton in the 2010 primary. Hoogendyk hasn’t yet filed to run.
