Choral camp concludes with free July 12 concert

The Dogwood Youth Choral Summer Camp, which is in its eighth year, will hold a concert at 7:30 p.m. July 12 at Southwestern Michigan College.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the theater of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the college’s Dowagiac campus.

The week-long camp begins on July 8m culminating with concert on July 12.

A collaborative event between the Dowagiac Dogwood Fine Arts Festival and SMC, the Youth Choral Camp works with middle and high school students who are interested in vocal music. The students learn basic musicianship, aural comprehension, song characterization and healthy vocal techniques.

“It’s pretty incredible to see how the students grow vocally in one week,” said camp Director David Carew, who also is the college’s choral director.

Over the last eight summers, the camp has served more than 300 young choral enthusiasts from southwest Michigan and northern Indiana.

Youth Choral Camp is made possible through the generosity of the St. Denys Foundation, SMC and area student scholarship sponsors.
