Edwardsburg honors spelling bee winners

The Edwardsburg Board of Education honored its Cass County Spelling Bee winners at its regular meeting Monday night.

The fifth, sixth and eighth grade teams all took first place in the annual spelling bee held at Southwestern Michigan College.

The winning fifth grade team consisted of Anthony Castelucci, Brendan Covyeou, Madeleine LaPierre, Bailey McGivern, Taylor Pitt and Colby Sidenbender.

The sixth grade team was made up of Corinne Cogdell, Megan Huycke, Alyssa Madison, Ella Merrill, Ian McNaughton, Katie McArnarney and Jack Whitcomb.

The eighth grade team was made up of Autumn Axline, Haley Bumgarner, Brayden Curtis, Samuel Larey, Elizabeth Neuerburg, Clay Sidenbender and Melissa Weaver.

Also honored was fourth grader Paige Miller, who was the individual champion, and Bumgarner, who was the individual eighth grade champ. Whitcomb took second and Axline finished third in the individual competition.

In other business, the board was presented roofing bids by Tony Leininger for the Edwardsburg High School roofing improvements and Chief Financial Officer Anne Flautt announced the school lunch prices for the 2013-14 school year.

Prices for the elementary students will be $1.10 for breakfast and $1.95 for lunch, while the secondary prices are $1.35 for breakfast and $2.20 for lunch.

The price increase is 10 cents, which was part of the Equity in School Lunch Price mandate from the federal government.

According to Flautt, Edwardsburg is required to look at the difference between the free meal reimbursement that they receive and what they actually charge for school lunches.

The difference forced the district to increase the cost of those meals.

“It’s not something we wanted to do,” Flautt said. “It is something we had to do by law.”
