Niles suffers first loss to No. 7-ranked DeWitt

GRAND RAPIDS — The Niles wrestling team suffered its first loss of the season at the Forest Hills Eastern Invitational Saturday.

The No. 10-ranked Vikings went 4-1, their lone loss coming to No. 7-ranked DeWitt 33-30 in the fourth round of the tournament.

Niles defeated Sturgis 60-6, Forest Hills Eastern 78-6. Allendale 56-6 and Clinton, which is ranked No. 3 in Division 4, 34-18 in the third-place match.

DeWitt was the tournament champion with Gaylord finishing second.

Going undefeated on the day for the Vikings, who wrestled two or more matches were Austin Franco (119/125), Ryan Franco (119), Javond Ball (130), Austin Reed (130/135), Kade Wagley (140), Robert Glover (145/152), Cade Best (160), Dawson Bruckner (189) and Brian Soto (285).

The Vikings return to the mat on Wednesday when they travel to Portage Northern for a SMAC match.

Mendon Invitational

MENDON — The Dowagiac wrestling team finished third at the Mendon Invitational on Saturday.

The Chieftains went 4-1, falling to host Mendon 59-9.

Dowagiac (14-3) defeated Battle Creek Pennfield (47-34), Bloomingdale (56-21) and Galesburg-Augusta (74-6).

In the third-place match, Dowagiac defeated Battle Creek Harper Creek 49-24.

Going undefeated on the day for the Chieftains were Kody Walker (119/125) and Dylan Elmore (112).

Posting a 4-1 records were Xander Keller (140), Gage Williams (145/152), Justin Lyle (171/189) and Wyatt Bailey (285).

Buchanan Super Duals

BUCHANAN — St. Joseph went 5-0 to win the Buchanan Super Duals Saturday.

The host Bucks finished as the runner-up with a 4-1 record, while Benton Harbor was third at 3-2, River Valley fourth at 2-3, Eau Claire fifth at 1-4 and Cassopolis sixth at 0-5.

Undefeated Buchanan wrestlers were Frank Furst, Caleb Kline and Adam Eger.

Posting 4-1 records were Andrew Ruth, Dakota Cowan, Jarick Starns and Richard Defreez.
