THREE RIVERS — Two down and one to go.

The Edwardsburg volleyball team continued its march toward a Class B district championship by taking out another Wolverine Conference foe Wednesday night.

The Eddies defeated Three Rivers 3-1 and faced league rival Paw Paw in the title game Thursday night at Three Rivers High School.

The Redskins swept Dowagiac 3-0 to advance to the championship match.

In the first match, the Chieftains got off to a slow start in the opening set and never recovered.

The Redskins swept the Chieftains 25-15, 25-16 and 10-25.

“It was a rollercoaster tonight,” Dowagiac coach Rachel Zeider said. “I think that, as normal roller coasters do, we had our ups and downs. I wasn’t entirely pleased with our performance. I think we could have done 10 times better, but the way the girls did play, the heart that they did put out, did show that they had a lot of effort. They tried their best.”

The players that stood out for the Chieftains were Kelsey Crocker, Kenzie Cross and Natalie Davis. Crocker had five kills and Cross had four, while Davis, the team’s libero, lead the team in digs with 43.

In the second match of the night, the Eddies started off hot.

Edwardsburg defeated the Wildcats in the first two sets easily, 25-16 and 25-17.

However, in the third set, the match got interesting.

The Eddies trailed the Wildcats for the majority of the set and were even down 20-17. They fought hard and came back to tie the set at 24-24, but they ultimately lost 29-27.

After the tough loss, Edwardsburg got off to a slow start in the fourth set and fell behind 8-5. But the Eddies fought back and won the fourth and final set 25-20.

“I thought [our] performance was good the first two games,” Edwardsburg coach Sarah Strefling said. “I would have obviously liked to have won that third [set], but I am glad they didn’t give up the third [set] because sometimes that’s what happens to us. We come out [with] gusto in the first two [sets], and we just can’t seem to finish. But a win’s a win, so I am going to take it; I’m not going to be too picky tonight.”

A key to the Eddies’ victory was the play of Kylie Meek. After a modest performance in their quarterfinal match against Vicksburg on Tuesday, she bounced back on Wednesday.

“Meek stepped up big time,” Strefling said. “She, in my opinion, was struggling a little bit on Monday. Today, she carried us. I would have liked a little more defensive digs, but [my team] did very well. Audrey [Bellina] and Skye [Leach] did well, too. It was good to see them playing strong.”

The Eddies defeated Paw Paw twice during the regular season, winning the first 3-0 and the second 2-0.

“We’ve played Paw Paw. We’ve [beaten] Paw Paw,” Strefling said. “I think we’re confident, but we can’t be overconfident. We’ve got to show up and play every single time. That’s something I’ve been telling them all year.”

The championship was Thursday night.
