Regional tennis: Three in a row for Brandywine

SOUTH BEND — For the third straight year and the 15th time in the last 21 seasons, the Brandywine girls tennis team is a regional champion.

The Bobcats edged Berrien Springs 16-14 for the title at Leeper Park in South Bend Thursday.

Lake Michigan Catholic finished third with 11 points and Buchanan fourth with 10 points.

Brandywine now advances to the state finals, which will be June 2-3 in Holly, Michigan.

The Bobcat swept the doubles flights to earn the victory.

Only one Brandywine singles player reached the championship match as Shaylee Smith lost to Berrien Springs’ Marissa Jaggi 6-2 and 6-4 in the top flight.

Winning regional championships for the Bobcats were Hanna Martin and Ava Moody (No. 1), Lauren Srmek and Olivia Whitney (No. 2), Megan Schmidt and Maigon Conrad (No. 3) and Carrigan Duffield and Alysa Marlin (No. 4).

Buchanan’s Cheyanne Cowen was a runner-up at No. 2 singles after falling to Lake Michigan Catholic’s Mary Ellen Nuter in straight sets.

 

Division 3 tennis

ALLEGAN — Edwardsburg finished second to perennial regional powerhouse Allegan at the Division 3 regional Friday and will advance to the state finals June 2-3 at Kalamazoo College.

The host Tigers finished with 28 points, while the Eddies finished with 23.

Edwardsburg had seven of its eight flights finish second Friday.

Hannah Ahmen (No. 2), Annika Smith (No. 3) and Sarah Scheretie (No. 4) were all runnners-up in singles competition.

Zoe Laubach and Kindra Pressinell (No. 1), Jena Holst and Natalie Kessler (No. 2), Ella Merrill and Grace VanOverberghe (No. 3) and Breanna Webb and Olivia Wagner (No. 4) were all runners-up in doubles action.

Dowagiac’s Kaley Brogan, Mary Bonomo and Ally Hall all won first round matches in singles competition.

The Chieftains’ No. 1 doubles team of Luda Dixon-French and Lexi Chorba were also a first round winners, as was Mackenzie Brooks and Hailee Green at No. 2 doubles and Jamie O’Brien and Jessany Stockwell at No. 3 doubles.
