LANSING — Sen. John Proos has co-sponsored a proposed amendment to Michigan’s constitution to ensure the right to hunt, fish and trap in the state.

“Hunting and fishing have long been Michigan traditions, and I will continue to protect the fundamental rights of Michigan residents to hunt and fish in our state,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “Our outdoor heritage is important to our economy, natural resources and way of life. Michigan’s abundance of game birds and animals attracts the third-most hunters in the nation, and our vast number of rivers and lakes draws the fifth-most anglers.

“Outdoor enthusiasts help with Michigan conservation efforts and wildlife management by purchasing licenses and controlling animal and fish populations, and they also contribute billions of dollars to the state economy every year.”

Senate Joint Resolution G would protect Michigan’s rich heritage of hunting, fishing and trapping by establishing the right in the Michigan Constitution.

If SJR G receives two-thirds support in both legislative chambers, the proposal would be placed on the ballot of the next general election for the people to decide.

“By declaring in the constitution the people’s right to hunt, fish and trap animals that are held in the public trust — and require aggressive enforcement of laws protecting those rights — we would ensure that these rights are preserved for future generations,” Proos said. “As we work to protect these rights, I encourage southwest Michigan families and out-of-state visitors to get outdoors and enjoy some of the world’s best fishing and hunting in our state.”
