Dowagiac blanks Shamrocks 5-0

Dowagiac took 52 shots against visiting Berrien Springs in a non-conference soccer match Monday.

Only 29 of those shots were on goal, but the Chieftains were able to get five into the net for a 5-0 win over the Shamrocks.

“A difficult shooting day for us, as we had 52 total shots (29 on goal),” Dowagiac coach Ryan Haines said. “Though I like that we generated a lot of offense tonight, we have to have a better shot percentage. Especially against the competition we have coming up.”

Kellyn Daly scored the first two goals of the match in the 15th and 22nd minutes with assists coming form Magali Cruz.

Daly now has eight goals in seven games for the Chieftains.

Dowagiac made it 3-0 when Cruz scored in the 30th minute with the assist coming from Cali Rank.

Logan McMeeken and Daniela Morales scored the two Dowagiac goals in the second half. Rank assisted on the McMeeken goal in the 54th minute, while Anayda Lucio assisted on Morales’ goal in the 65th minute.

After having to make 60 saves in the Chieftains’ first six matches, goalie Gracie Younger only had to make a single save against Berrien Springs.

Dowagiac is back on the pitch at 6 p.m. today at South Haven for a Wolverine Conference match before hosting Buchanan in a non-league affair against Buchanan at 5 p.m. Thursday.
