Man arrested in connection with Dowagiac stabbing

A man is currently in custody after assaulting a patron with a knife during a bar fight Saturday night.

According to a release from the Dowagiac Police Department, Donte Lofton, 28, was arrested in connection with an incident that occurred inside Beeson Street Bar just before midnight Saturday. Local officers were dispatched to the location after receiving a report that a fight had broken out at the business.

Upon arrival, police found a witness shouting that a person had been attacked with a knife. Officers also found a suspect, Lofton, leaving the area. Police detained the man.

The officers located a razor knife along with a victim suffering from multiple injuries from a blade during their investigation of the scene. Crews with Pride Care Ambulance were called to the scene, and the victim was transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial
for treatment.

The victim’s injuries were not life threatening; the subject was released from care a short while after arrival.

Lofton was lodged at Cass County Jail on felony assault charges. He is being held on $10,000 cash or surety bond.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Cass County District Court Tuesday afternoon.

Dowagiac police are continuing to investigate the incident.
