The Central Cass Fire Department arrived on the scene in the 65000 block of Robinson Road at approximately 1:25 p.m. to find a structure that was fully involved.

Cassopolis Fire Chief Jeff Locke immediately called for the assistance of Penn Township, Porter Township, Howard Township and the Edwardsburg Fire Department.

The Wayne Township Fire Department was dispatched to the Central Cass Fire Department and put on standby.

“The building was more of sentimental value than what was in it,” Locke said. “It was the first barn built on the farm.”

Locke said that the end of the barn where the fire started had electricity, but nothing was plugged in at the time.

There was also no heat or gas at that end of the barn.

Melvin Cripe, the owner of the farm, is currently in Florida. However, his son was home at the time of the fire.

There were no injuries to humans or animals.
