A 15-year-old Dowagiac resident was hospitalized Saturday evening after being struck by a car, according to release from the Dowagiac Police Department.

According to police, officers with the department responded to a call of car/pedestrian accident at 6:57 p.m. that day on Oak Street near East Telegraph Street in the city. Police responding to the accident learned that the 15-year-old victim was walking down Oak Street with a group of friends when a vehicle, driven by 19-year-old Dowagiac resident, drove up behind the group of pedestrians, striking the victim.

The driver hit the teenager due to impaired vision caused by lights from an oncoming vehicle, police were told. Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the accident.

The injured victim was taken to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hosptial for treatment, and eventually released.

Officers are continuing to review the incident.

Dowagiac officers were assisted on scene by the Dowagiac Fire Department, Pride Care EMS, and officers of the Pokagon Band Tribal Police Department.
