Athlete Showcase: Dowagiac’s Mason Hiler

Mason Hiler is a senior on the Dowagiac wrestling team.

 

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

MH: Earning my varsity letter in wrestling as a freshman.

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

MH: Contracting impetigo as a freshman and not finishing the season, so I didn’t receive the letter that I earned.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

MH: My father, because through everything he has always worked to support our family.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

MH: For me, it’s definitely the moment you shake your opponent’s hand.

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

MH: When I had a postseason match against one of my best friends, who was on JV and losing 9-6 against him.

How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?

MH: I usually do push ups or go for a run.

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

MH: Boxing.

Who would you say is your “biggest fan?” Why?

MH: My mother, because she grew up with wrestling and she knows how much it takes and how hard I’m working.

How would you give away $50,000?

MH: I would give $10,000 to the wrestling program and the rest to my family to help pay the bills.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

MH: The Dowagiac wrestling team.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

MH: Probably be overweight and sit at home playing video games all day.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

MH: Keeping my weight steady.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

MH: I would keep it the way it is to be honest.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

MH: Someone once told me that I have the potential to be a great wrestler.

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

MH: Being the ring bearer for my cousin’s wedding. I am very glad I did it.

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

MH: I watched someone come up from junior varsity into a varsity tournament and get first place.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

MH: Playing Magic, The Gathering, because it’s full of strategy and I enjoy puzzles and things like that.
