Two people were hospitalized following a two-car accident on Marcellus Highway Monday night, according to a release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Justin Shepard Jr., 71, of Dowagiac, and Brooke Johnson, 20, of Schoolcraft, were transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and Lakeland Hospital in Niles respectively following the collision outside of Dowagiac.

According to authorities, the crash occurred on the highway near Sunset Drive around 8:07 p.m. A vehicle operated by Johnson was heading westbound on Marcellus when she lost control of the automobile, swerving into the east bound lane and hitting
Shepard’s vehicle.

Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles, according to the police report. Both were transported for treatment by Pride Care Ambulance.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, and both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time, police said.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Pokagon Tribal Police, Pride Care Ambulance and both Wayne and Dowagiac Fire Departments.
