The Niles District Library will offer the following free events and activities this week. A library card is not needed to participate in any program.

Monday, Jan. 11

• 4 p.m. — Friends of Niles District Library meeting

 

Tuesday, Jan. 12

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

The Connection is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened or for referrals and information. Representatives will be at Niles District Library on the second and third Tuesdays of every month. (Lunch break is noon to 1 p.m.) For questions or information, contact Stephanie at (269) 277-5055.

• 10 a.m. to noon — Special Edition: Movie Day showing “Pan”

• 5 to 7 p.m. — Welcome to Overdrive class

Get an E-reader for Christmas? The library will help people learn how to use it and Overdrive, the library’s online service for checking out free eBooks and audio books. Register at the information desk or by calling (269) 683-8545 ext. 112.

• 6 to 6:30 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

Chips and Chapters is a fun, new read-aloud story time. Eat chips and follow along as Tara reads aloud from a chapter book each Tuesday.

• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama storytime

Tuesday evening, Storytime is for the entire family. There will be stories with a winter theme, musical numbers and a craft. Participants should feel free to wear pajamas.

• 6:30 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies

Likely the tastiest book club around, Fiction for Foodies is a potluck. Books are available at the information desk.

 

Wednesday, Jan. 13

• Multiple times — Storytime day: Arctic animal theme

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 and 11 a.m., Storytime (3-5 years) at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 10 a.m. to noon — Welcome to Overdrive Class

• 10 a.m. to noon -—Disability Network and Area Agency on Aging: Information and one-on-one guidance session

Meet representatives from both organizations at the library on the second Wednesday of the month.

 

Thursday, Jan. 14

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 1 to 5 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach newcomers how to play. Other board games are also available.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens get to choose the activity from a wide variety of options including video games, crafts and movies.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Crystal Bowl Meditation

Special guest Inner Journey Healing Arts Center will lead a crystal bowl meditation session. Even for the inexperienced, simply listening to the rich, pure, vibrant tone of a bowl can be deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.

 

Friday, Jan. 15

• 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. — Coloring for adults

Adult Coloring has moved days. The library has all the supplies, plus coffee and music each Friday in the boardroom. Relax, socialize and create something beautiful.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

Bring yarn or a sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while chatting and working. Rookies are welcome and there is a teacher and a few loaner tools to get people started.

• 5 to 6 p.m. — SCA: Medieval hunting and coursing

The Society for Creative Anachronism’s Giuliana Lucia Solari (Julie Minor), Houndmistress with the Middle Kingdom Coursing Guild, presents a description of medieval hunting and care. She will be accompanied by her coursing hound, Portia.

• 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Society for Creative Anachronism

They’re back. During the winter, the Barony of the White Waters uses the rotunda for heavy fighter practice, rapier practice, crafts, arts and sciences — all in one very cool afterhours package. Being a member isn’t required.

 

Saturday, Jan. 16

• 10 a.m. to noon — Chess club

Love to play chess? This group meets twice monthly to play on the first and third Saturdays. All ages and abilities are welcome and teachers are available.

• 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. — Jedis and Jammies for Teens

Teens that are strong with the force… come to the library and watch Star Wars Episodes 4-6. Popcorn will be served.

• 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Nerf Night After-hours

Bring a Nerf gun to this after hours event that gives people the run of the entire main floor of the library. The event is open to all ages, but children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

A waiver must be signed at the event by either the participant or their parent/guardian and eye protection is encouraged. Registration is required to make sure that there are enough participants. Register by emailing brandon.steven@nileslibrary.net or by calling (269) 683-8545 ext. 117.
