Phillip “Phil” Lawson, 71, of Niles passed away at his home on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Elsie, Michigan to the late Virgil and Sylvia (Robinson) Lawson on April 26, 1944. Phillip graduated from Niles high school in 1962 and later finished his schooling at Ferris State University. On September 18, 1976, he went on to marry the love of his life Kathy Ballard at a ceremony in Niles.

Phil worked for 22 years as a draftsman for National Standard and later retired from Ameriwood Industries. His true passion in life was his family, helping others and providing quality housing for the people and community he loved. He also served as a founding president of the Southwest Michigan Landlord Association where he brought a common voice to his peers while providing assistance to the landlord community.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 39 years, Kathy Lawson; sons, Howard Lawson and Andreas (Courtney) Lawson, daughters; Michelle (Michael) Bakerson and Mandy (Eric) Crowley, sister; Darlene Mercurio, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Phil is preceded in death by his parents; Virgil and Sylvia Lawson and brother, James Lawson.

At Phil’s request cremation has taken place and his family will be remembering him privately.
