For the last eight years, Dowagiac VFW Post 1855 has helped sponsor the program Shop with a Cop-Hero.

With support from hometown Dowagiac Shopko store, Dowagiac Elks Lodge, Alltech Roof Repair, Deerpath Recyclers, local police and other donors, Dowagiac Union Schools was able to provide 10 deserving children with the opportunity to buy Christmas presents for their families.

The children selected must have good grades and attendance in school.

After shopping with police, firemen and VFW members, gifts were wrapped by Santa’s helpers.

Children were driven in police and fire vehicles to the VFW post, where they enjoyed pizza, cookies and games with safety personnel until picked up by their parents.

This program has proven to be a beneficial program for our community.
