CASS COUNTY — A 43-year-old Cassopolis man is dead after his vehicle struck a tree early Wednesday morning in Volinia Township.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department said it is withholding the identity of the driver until family is contacted.

The accident occurred just before 1 a.m. Wednesday on Dutch Settlement Road east of Lawrence Road in Cass County.

Police say the vehicle was traveling east on Dutch Settlement Road near Lawrence Road when it left the roadway and hit a large tree. Deputies attempted to revive the subject, but he was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

The subject was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

This incident remains under investigation at this time.

Cass County deputies were assisted at the scene by Life Care Ambulance and Penn Township Fire Department.
