A pair of Cass County football teams earned Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Academic All-State.

Dowagiac in Division 4 and Edwardsburg in Division 3 were honored by the MHSFCA.

Buchanan earned academic all-state in Division 5.

There were 143 teams nominated for the honor, including 14 in Division 3, 18 in Division 4 and 20 in Division 5.

The top four teams in each division will receive a plaque honoring their achievement as academic all-state.

Edwardsburg finished second behind Chelsea with a GPA of 3.910. Dowagiac’s GPA was 3.520, while Buchanan’s was 3.582.

Two other Wolverine Conference schools, Vicksburg and Three Rivers, also earned academic all-state in Division 3 and Division 4 respectively. St. Joseph was honored in Division 3.

Edwardsburg’s Ben Robertson was named second team MHSFCA Academic All-State, while Dowagiac’s Reid Adams was named honorable mention.

The 2015 MHSFCA Academic All-State football team is the 30th such squad selected.

Eighteen student-athletes automatically qualified for first team according to the coaches association by scoring 295 or above on their 300-point scale.

Fourteen members of the first team are ranked No. 1 in their high school class and 28 of the total nominees are ranked No. 1.

There are 14 first team selections with a 4.0 GPA or higher. The average GPA was 3.992 for the first team.

One first team selection scored 35 on his ACT, four scored 34, seven scored 33, eight scored 32 and three scored 31.

The MHSFCA also announced its regional Coaches of the Year.

Buchanan’s Reid McBeth and Cassopolis’ Dan Purlee were named in Region 7, while Benton Harbor’s Elliot Uzelac was selected in Region 8.
