A Niles woman was seriously injured in an accident that involved three vehicles early Sunday morning in Niles Township.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is reporting that the accident occurred near the intersection of South 11th Street and Bell Road at approximately 3:35 a.m.

A Pontiac Grand Prix attempting to cross South 11th Street just south of the Bell Road intersection was struck by a large box truck that was heading south on South 11th Street.

The Pontiac came to rest on South 11th Street and was struck by a Volkswagen traveling north on South 11th Street.

The passenger in the Pontiac — a 33-year-old Niles woman — suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in South Bend,

Indiana. The passenger was placed in the intensive care unit with serious but non-life threatening injuries as of noon Sunday. The driver of the Pontiac — a 28-year-old Edwardsburg man — reported only minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. The other drivers were not injured.

The driver of the large box truck is a male from Windsor, Ontario Canada.

The driver of the Volkswagen is a male from the Buchanan area.

Preliminary indications of the investigation reveal that the 28-year-old driver of the Pontiac failed to yield the right of way. Preliminary results of the investigation reveals that alcohol and speed were not contributing factors to this crash.

The investigation into this crash is continuing and is being handled by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit.
