Niles American Legion to move out of building

Citing a lack of revenue, Post Commander John Sly said the American Legion in Niles is moving out of its current location at the former Elks Club on North Third Street by the end of the month.

The Army veteran said the legion will still exist as a “paper post” and will hold its regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at the Niles District Library beginning in January.

“The problem is in order to keep going we would have to have something to make money, like bingo, that is constantly bringing in money,” he said. “Bingo wasn’t doing it.”

Sly said the legion’s only source of revenue over the past several years has come from membership dues and bingo.

Even though it doesn’t have a home, American Legion Post 26 is not in danger of losing its charter, Sly said.

“Our membership would have to drop below 15 and it would be a long time before that happens,” he said.

American Legion Post 26 currently has 226 members, down from around 250 six months ago.

Sly said there is no current plan to find a new location, although the post is keeping its bingo equipment in case the situation improves.

“If we did get a building we could plan on having bingo every once in a while to help with revenue,” he said.

The post stopped offering bingo at the end of September due to declining revenue.
