One dead in fatal Cass County fire

VANDALIA, Mich. — An 87-year-old Vandalia women died in a fire in Newberg Township Saturday night.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Phyllis Jean Tucker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies responded to the 61000 Block of Lewis Lake Road, Newberg Township, for a house fire at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival on scene, deputies found the house was fully engulfed by the fire and two of the homeowners were located outside of the residence and had escaped unharmed.

Three of the family’s four dogs also escaped the fire, with the fourth being located by fire fighters and transported by Cass County Animal Control for care and treatment.

At this time the fire remains under investigation.

Assisting deputies on scene were Newberg Township Fire Department, Cass Fire Department, Porter Township Fire Department, Penn Township Fire Department, Newberg Ambulance, LifeCare Ambulance, Cass County Animal Control, Cass County Sheriff’s Department chaplain and Michigan State Police Fire Investigation.
