Some artists work in paint; others in clay.

For Lawrence’s Jeff and Theresa Heaton, the medium they use to express themselves are whatever recycled goods they can get their hands on.

In the case of their award winning “Vasarely Ecology” piece that was on display inside Caruso’s Candy Kitchen last May, those goods included old cans of cat food and toilet paper rolls.

The couple’s eclectic collection of “upcycled” art has returned to the Grand Old City, as the two are the newest featured artists at the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival gallery, located inside their offices at Huntington Bank on Commercial Street. The festival hosted the pair Wednesday night for the opening of the new exhibit, entitled “Regenerated Whimsy.”

“To stand back and see our work in a different space like this, it’s a nice feeling,” Jeff said of new the showcase.

The two were invited to show off their work locally after Jeff’s “Vasarely Ecology” received the best in show award during Dogwood’s Up Front Art Walk in May. While that particular piece was sold following the show, a second version in the same series occupies the corner of their new exhibit.

While immersed in the arts for much of their lives, the two have only begun working with recycled goods since moving from Ohio, where Jeff taught photography, drawing and painting for 31 years, to Michigan in 2009. Working out of their home-based Cheeky Chic-y Studio, the two produce practical items like urban vessels as well as expansive pieces of art.

The name of their show says it all about their philosophy of combining the values of art with the virtues of recycling, Jeff said.

“We’re creating something beautiful and fun out of something that was going to be discarded,” he said.

The Jeff and Teresa say their work couldn’t exist with each other’s help — Jeff provides much of the inspiration, painting and design work for their pieces, while Teresa uses her knowledge of sewing and quilting to tie everything together, she said.

“Jeff is the designer, but I’m the executor — I’m the one who takes his ideas and polishes them,” she said.

Their personalities also mesh well when it comes to their work, with Teresa’s more Type-A personality helping to manage their products, while Jeff’s more creative side helping to fuel new ones, she said.

“Regenerated Whimsy” will be on display at the Dogwood offices through Dec. 22. Visitors can also purchase the art on display, and will be able to take their pieces home following the end of the show.
