The wooden cross-arm on a utility pole broke and caught fire Wednesday afternoon at the corner of South 11th Street and Bell Road in Niles Township, causing isolated power outages and traffic disturbances in the area.

The pole is located in the southeast corner of the Shelton’s Farm Market parking lot area. The Niles Township Fire Department responded shortly before 2 p.m. and stayed on scene until AEP crews arrived to fix the problem. The issue resulted in several nearby traffic signals, including ones at South 11th and Bell, and US-12 and South Third, to become flashing red lights.
