BERRIEN SPRINGS — It did not take long for Buchanan to eliminate Dowagiac from the Class B District tournament Wednesday night.

The Bucks set a new school record for victories with 46 as they swept the Chieftains 3-0 in the semifinals. Buchanan defeated Dowagiac 25-11, 25-19 and 25-9 to advance to tonight’s championship match against Lakeshore.

The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Berrien Springs High School.

The Chieftains found themselves behind early in the first match, 11-3. Buchanan seemed to be covering every inch of real estate and getting to every ball. Dowagiac was able to break up Buchanan’s domination only momentarily and fell 25-11.

The second set was, by far, the most competitive between the two teams. Dowagiac started strong and jumped out to an 8-6 lead. The Lady Bucks were able to bounce right back, though, taking the lead 8-7 and never relinquishing it.

The teams battled back and fourth, trading points. The Chieftains kept it close until Buchanan got hot and went on a roll. With the score 12-11 in favor of Buchanan, the Lady Bucks reeled off seven straight points.

Dowagiac never stopped fighting.

In a huge hole, it slowly climbed closer and closer to the Bucks. Down, 23-15, the Chieftains went on a four-point run. That would be as close as they would get and the second set ended, 25-19.

The final set saw a deflated Dowagiac team against an energetic and motivated Buchanan team. The Bucks finished off the sweep, 25-9 and advance one step closer to the title.

The next test for Buchanan will be Lakeshore. The two teams faced off early in the season with the Bucks escaped with a narrow victory.

“I think that we are more consistent than in the beginning of the year when we played them,” Buchanan coach Lisa Holak said. “We’ve made some changes to our line up. So have they. We are going to continue to focus on what we do and we will be ready.”
