Activities planned at Buchanan senior center

Fernwood Leaf Walk and Lunch

Tuesday, Oct. 6, noon to 2:30 p.m.

Celebrate fall with a leaf identification walk at Fernwood Botanical Garden on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Meet at the Senior Center at 11:45 a.m. Have lunch in the Fernwood Café prior to the walk.

 

Leaf Printing Class

10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7

This class uses real leaves and fabric paint to make a fun fall design. Bring prewashed light-colored T-shirts, towels, tote bags, pillow cases, etc. for projects.

The center will provide the paint and leaves, but feel free to bring leaves from your yard. Class is limited so sign up today.

 

Coffee Chat: Donna Ochenryder

9 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 7

Meet Donna Ochenryder at the Coffee Chat on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 9 a.m. Donna was born and raised in Niles and has always been interested in Niles history. If she didn’t know it, she did the research, making her a wealth of historical information and photographs.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Donna and how she became a self-proclaimed “Niles Historian,” and see photos of old storefronts and businesses you may remember in Niles.

Buchanan Senior Center leaders say this is sure to be a fun and interesting trip down memory lane. Buchanan Meadows will be serving refreshments.

 

Friday Movie Matinee: Chef

1:15 p.m. Oct. 9

The next Friday movie matinee feature is Chef, with Jon Favreau, Sofia Vergara, and Emjay Anthony. A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family. Show begins at 1:15 p.m. in the center’s library and includes popcorn and beverage.

 

Diabetes PATH

1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays

Oct. 15 through Nov. 19

The Buchanan Area Senior Center presents another helpful program through the Area Agency on Aging called Diabetes PATH (Personal Action Toward Health). This 6-week workshop, developed and tested by Stanford University, will help people learn the techniques and strategies for the day-to-day management of diabetes.

Those attending will have the opportunity to learn about healthy eating, dealing with stress, medication usage, foot care, and much more. This free workshop is on Thursdays, Oct. 15 through Nov. 19, 1 to 3:30 p.m. Call or visit the Buchanan Senior Center to sign up.

 

Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart about Your Mouth

11 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 11

Many chronic illnesses prevalent in older adults are associated with periodontal disease. A healthy mouth is vital to speaking, smiling, kissing, singing, and many other pleasurable activities.

Guests will learn about good oral health in this Oral Health America workshop, presented by Barb Stark from the Area Agency on Aging, Inc.

This one-hour program takes place from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Oct. 12, and is helpful to all seniors, even if you wear dentures. There is no cost for the program, and each person will receive a complimentary bag of dental supplies. Call or visit the Buchanan Senior Center to sign up.
