Dowagiac Equestrian Team wins district championship

The Dowagiac Equestrian Team captured the 2015 District No. 3 B Division championship.

The team is made up of juniors Katlyn Briney and Danielle Lamb, sophomores Gavin Luthringer and Jarrett Sands as well as freshman Jared Stilwell.

Coaches are Danielle Franklin, Nattalee Smith, Kayla Dewey and Judy Stilwell.

District 3 meets were held Aug. 30 and Sept. 19-20 at Berrien County Fairgrounds.

Dowagiac’s scored a total of 606 points and reserve champions Edwardsburg B team scored 588 points. Both teams advanced to regional competition this weekend.

District 3 is hosting the meet.

Briney rode Shooter and Cyote. Briney scored points for the team in Saddle Seat Fitting and Showing, Hunt Seat Fitting and Showing, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunt Seat Bareback, Western equitation, Western Riding Pattern, Flag Race, Cloverleaf Race, Poles and Two-Person Relay.

Briney scored a total of 135 points for the team with six firsts, four seconds, three thirds, five fourths, three fifths and two sevenths.

Lamb competed with her horses Jackie and Nat. She scored points for the team in Western Fitting and Showing Saddle Seat Fitting and Showing, Hunt Seat Fitting and Showing, Saddle Seat Equitation, Hunt Seat Equitation, Flag Race, Poles and Two-Person Relay. Danielle scored a total 94 points with three firsts, two seconds, three thirds, three fourths, three fifths, two sixths, two sevenths, and one eighth.

Luthringer was the top scorer for the team with 185 points. Luthringer scored points in Western Fitting and Showing, Saddle Seat Fitting and Showing, Saddle Seat Equitation, Saddle Seat Bareback, Western Equitation, Western Bareback, Western riding Pattern, Trail Pattern, Flag Race, Cloverleaf Race and Two-Person Relay. Gavin points were earned with seven firsts, nine seconds, five thirds, six fourths, one fifth and one seventh.

Sands scored points for the team in Western Fitting and Showing, Hunt Seat Fitting and Showing, Western Equitation, Western Bareback, Flag Race and Cloverleaf. Sands scored a total of 70 points with one second, four thirds, two fourths, four fifths, four sixths and one eighth.

Stilwell scored points for the team in Western Fitting and Showing, Hunt Seat Fitting and Showing, Saddle Seat Pattern, Hunt Seat Bareback, Western Equitation, Western Bareback, Western Riding Pattern, Trail Patter, Cloverleaf Race, Poles and Two-Person Relay. Stilwell scored a total of 122 with four firsts, three seconds, four thirds, two fourths, six fifths, two sixths, two sevenths and one eighth.

Other District 3 teams advancing to Region A were Division champions Berrien Springs with 877 points, Reserve champions Edwardsburg A with 806 points. The C Division champions were Bridgman with 452 points, Reserve champion Lakeshore with 433 points. The D Division champions were St. Joe with 292 points and Reserve champion Coloma with 291 points.

Region A will be held at the Berrien County Fairgrounds Oct. 3-4.  District 3 will host the event. Region A consists of Districts, 3, 15,16 and 19.

Coming from District 15 is A Division champs Marshall and Reserve champs Sturgis, B Division champs Vicksburg and Reserve champs Battle Creek Harper Creek, C Division champs Bronson and Reserve champs Battle Creek Pennfield, D Division champs Galesburg Augusta and Reserve champs Mendon.

Coming from District 15 is A Division champs Coopersville, B Division champs Zeeland West and Reserve champs Byron Center, C Division champs Holland Christian and Reserve champs Allendale, D Division champs Unity Christian and Reserve champs Hudsonville.

Coming from District 19 is A Division champs Caledonia and Reserve champs South Christian, B Division champs Gull Lake and Reserve champs Hastings, C Division champs Thorapple Kellogg and Reserve champs Lakewood, D Division champs Saranac and Reserve champs Grand Rapids Christian.
