Baseball great was a quote machine

Every once in a while we use our editorial space to publish famous quotes or words of wisdom pertaining to a specific subject or event.

So it was with great sadness Tuesday that we learned of the passing of baseball great Yogi Berra, a man whose quotes were as memorable as what he did on the field.

Berra played 19 years in the Major Leagues from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s. Most of his career was spent as a member of the New York Yankees.

He won 10 World Series Champions and is one of the few players to have been named the American League Most Valuable Player three times. He was elected in to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

For all the good he did on the diamond, Berra also had a comparable knack for coming up with interesting, funny and thought-provoking sayings.

His quotes are referred to as “Yogi-isms” and appear on posters and T-shirts all over the world.

In honor of this great sports figure and everyman philosopher, we are publishing some of his most well known quotes.

There is a good chance you have heard many of these sayings and did not know where they came from.

• It ain’t over ‘till it’s over.

• It’s déjà vu all over again.

• When you come to a fork. in the road… take it.

• I didn’t really say everything I said

• You can observe a lot by watching.

• A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.

• It gets late early out here.

• Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.

• I want to thank everybody for making this day necessary

• Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.
