BUCHANAN — Buchanan High School hosted the second annual RedBud Tri-State Cross Country Invitational this Saturday at the RedBud motocross track in Buchanan.

Teams from four different divisions made their way to Buchanan to run the roughly 3-mile route across the rolling hills of the property.

Teams from Divisions 3 and 4 got the event started early Saturday morning and it was senior, Matt Ring from Schoolcraft who was able to cross the finish line first with a time of 17:36.

It was Berrien Spring’s Brad Wurzel and Brandywine’s James Harrell who were right behind him with times of 17:47 and 17:50, respectively. While Buchanan did not have an individual runner finish in the top 25, it was still able to take fourth overall as a team with a combine time of 200 minutes between the five Buck runners.

The Division 3 and 4 girls race was dominated by Watervliet, which posted three of the top four times.

Buchanan had the best times of the local teams, with three runners finishing in the top 11. The Bucks Emily Riley (24:00) and Brooke Wesner (24:03) finished seventh and eighth place to lead Buchanan to fourth place overall with a combined time of 2:17:0.

After Divisions e and 4 JV and middle school teams were run, it was the Division 1 and 2 schools’ turn to hit the trail.

The girls got things started with Niles freshman Taylor Altergott posting the best time of the local schools (22:24) and finishing ninth overall. Right behind her was Edwardsburg freshman, Kara Shrider posting a time of 22:28. Dowagiac junior Emily Dodd finished with a time of 25:51.

Overall, it was Dearborn Divine Child taking home the team gold with Edwardsburg fishing fourth, Niles fifth and Dowagiac sixth.

The final heat of the day was the Division 1 and 2 boys.

The leaderboard was dominated by Zeeland East and Vicksburg, but Edwardsburg freshman Brock Eaves had a strong showing, placing fifth with a time of 18.23.

Niles’ top runner, Devin Tomlinson, finished in 11th with a time of 19:04 and Dowagiac’s Kaleb Detwiler (19:35) and DeYonte Sullivan (19:43) finished 16th and 17th respectively.
