After driving his automobile into Mill Pond, a Dowagiac man was able to extricate himself and swim to safety Saturday morning, according to a release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood, Caleb G. Joseph Glenn-Jones, 20, of Dowagiac, was driving west on M-62, near Dutch Settlement Road in Wayne Township, when he fell asleep behind the wheel. Jones ran off the road, hit a guard rail, went down the embankment and was submerged in Mill Pond.

Officers responded to the call at 1:04 a.m., after Jones had exited the vehicle through its sunroof and swam to shore.

Underwood said Jones was transported to Dowagiac Lee Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

A seatbelt was worn during the accident, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Cass County Sheriff Deputies were assisted at the crash scene by Dowagiac Police Department, Pokagon Tribal Police Department, Dowagiac Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance.

The incident remains under investigation
