Parks offer great way to stay off technology and get outdoors

The more technology advances, the more reliant society becomes on it. Unfortunately, these digital connections, which allow us to communicate in fractions of seconds with people all over the world, seem to cause us to engage less and less with each other face to face.

This is why it is so important for our communities to continue their dedication to providing outlets for people to engage with one another — in person.

We are constantly reminded of the hard work our local leaders are doing to offer these opportunities, and I’m so proud to live in an area where community involvement, exercise and interactivity are such high priorities.

Niles, Dowagiac, Buchanan, Cassopolis and Edwardsburg all have longstanding traditions and events that people look forward to each year. Events like the Four Flags Area Apple Festival, the Under the Harvest Moon Festival, the Cass County Fair and even Friday night football games draw people away from their smart phones and laptops and force people to interact with each other on a more personal level.

On top of these highly anticipated events, our local governments have also found ways to create outlets for people to get outside and enjoy each other’s company all year long, and their efforts should be commended.

For example, last weekend, Dowagiac celebrated the opening of Russom Park, an athletic complex and park filled with various sports fields, as well as walking trails and playgrounds. This project has taken years to complete, but I think it is safe to say the project was worth the wait, as the park truly offers something for everyone.

In Niles, a group of pickleball players are working hard with our local government to install pickleball courts. These people are so enthusiastic about the unique sport that is growing quite popular in southwest Michigan, and they’re constantly recruiting new players.

The Niles City Council and other city leaders are working with the leaders of this initiative to make their dream a reality. This dedication to the people’s wishes is also commendable, and it’s so great to see the cooperation between the two groups.

As Michiana begins to change colors and we eat up every last minute of good weather before winter makes its debut, we hope everyone will take advantage of all the outdoor activities our area offers.

In no time at all, there will be plenty of time for smart phones and laptops as we’re all cooped up for winter.
