Changes made to Brandywine water tower paint job

Some minor changes are coming to Niles Charter Township’s project to repaint the Fairfield Street water tower.

Treasurer Jim Ringler said the original plan, which included painting the words “Home of Brandywine Bobcats” and two Bobcat mascot logos on the tower, would have resulted in letters too small to be seen from South 11th Street — the main road that cuts through the area.

The plan now, he said, is to paint either “Brandywine” or “Brandywine Bobcats” along with two Bobcat mascot logos on the tower. Ringler is working with the painting company to determine which option would result in the best visibility.

Ringler also used a local social media group to generate alternative lettering options after learning that “Home of the Brandywine Bobcats” would not work.

He said feedback from the Brandywine community resulted in the decision to go with either “Brandywine” or “Brandywine Bobcats.”

“We ought to be able to read something from South 11th. I think that is the highest priority,” Ringler said. “If you can’t read it then what’s the point?”

The color scheme is being done in Brandywine maroon and gold.

In May, the township board of trustees contracted with the George Kountoupes Painting Company, out of Lincoln Park, to repaint the tower and do other necessary work on the tower for $505,500.

Ringler said changing the lettering would not impact the cost of the project, which is ongoing.
