Host Buchanan overpowered Brandywine 25-11, 25-17 and 25-18 in a BCS Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday.

The Bucks came into the match-up 14-1 with an impressive squad led by the lone senior Jade Mosier.

Buchanan got off to a hot start, reeling off four straight points before Brandywine got on the scoreboard. The first set was controlled pretty easily by Buchanan, which was up by as many as 10 points.

Brandywine showed backbone towards the end of the match, winning four straight points of its own before eventually falling, 25-11.

The second set was a different story with the same ending.

The Bobcats got off to a hot start, scoring three straight points, but Buchanan would rally back, going up, 9-4. Brandywine’s trio of seniors, Sydney Carlson, Olivia DePriest and Emily Erwin, were able to calm their team down long enough to foster a mild comeback, getting within two points of the Bucks, 11-9.

That would be the closest they would come in the second set and Buchanan would go on to win, 25-17.

The third and final set would be the closest.

Buchanan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and it looked like the match would end quickly. At one point, Buchanan led Brandywine 15-4, but with their backs’ against the wall, the Bobcats pushed back.

The Bobcats fought and clawed for every point but could never fully get their game firing on all cylinders and fell 25-18.

“I felt like we were a little flat in games two and three,” Buchanan coach Lisa Holak said. “That is something we know we have to correct moving forward. Brandywine did a really nice job not giving up on balls, they never gave up and just kept coming at us.”

Buchanan’s Franki Strefling finished the night with an impressive stat line of 11 kills, nine digs, one block and the only ace of the night.

Next up for Buchanan is the Battle Creek Lakeview Invitational Saturday, while the Bobcats will travel to Bridgman Sept. 16, to face the Bees.
