Jerry Reed, 75, of Niles, died at 12:17 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at Lakeland Hospital-Niles unexpectedly but of natural causes.

He was born on March 31, 1940, in Saginaw, Michigan to Byron L. and Marguerite Susan (Rose) Reed, Sr. He attended school in Saginaw, and then joined the United States Army. After his honorable discharge from peacetime duty, he resided in several areas before settling in Niles in the 1980s. He was employed for many years by the Per Mar Security Services, serving at several manufacturing plants in Niles.

Jerry was a member of the American Legion Post #26 in Niles. He enjoyed golfing at Plym Park, fishing, and cooking – especially hot dogs. He is well remembered for a great sense of humor, and encouraging everyone he met.

Surviving family includes his long-time companion, Janet Layman of Niles and her son, Russell Frantz; Jerry’s sisters, Sherry Kime of Burt, Michigan and Linda Rondo of Pinconning, Michigan, a brother, Master Sergeant Byron (Gloria) Reed, Jr., U.S. Army, Retired of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his twin brother, Sergeant Larry Reed, U.S. Army who died in action in Binh Duong Province, South Viet Nam on Christmas Day of 1966; and by brothers-in-law Eugene Kime and Richard Rondo.

The family of Jerry Reed will gather privately at a later date. Interment will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Saginaw.
