Brandywine’s Bret Jacobs was given some added responsibilities for his senior year on the boys soccer team.

“This year I asked more of him in being a captain and a leader, and he has really stepped up,” Brandywine Coach Evan Winkler said. “We moved him from outside defense to the middle and has found a home.”

Jacobs started playing soccer at the beginning of his sophomore season and really didn’t see too much of the field.

“I came out of because some of the guys on the team said why not play soccer?,” he said. “So I did and I ended up liking it.”

However, last year Jacobs starting coming into his own and played on the outside becoming a lock down defender with his speed, skill and hard work.

And what should spectators expect from him in his senior season?

“Working hard. Definitely working hard,” he answered. “I will try to contain the opposing teams’ best player because I am in the back. Our defense will continue to push up.”

Being a captain and leader also has its perks, like helping the freshmen understand the speed and physicality of playing in a Varsity sport.

“We have two freshmen as our outside defenders now and I help make sure they keep the ball contained and to the outside,” Jacobs said. “I show them where to drop the ball back to get out of pressure and it will really help us out. I used to play in that spot so I understand it well.”

Even though Jacobs is undecided about where he will go to college, he knows it will all work itself out.

“Everybody always asks me about where I’m going to college,” he said. “I’ll figure it out.”

You can catch Jacobs and the rest of the Brandywine soccer team in their next game as they host Berrien Springs at 5 p.m. today.
