Neubauer leads Dowagiac past Rams

SOUTH HAVEN — Quarterback Anthony Neubauer ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as visiting Dowagiac defeated South Haven 28-14 in Wolverine Conference football Thursday night.

The win squared the Chieftains’ record at 1-1 heading into Friday night’s home opener against Three Rivers.

Neubauer scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and then capped the scoring with 2:09 to play with a 10-yard run that sealed the Dowagiac victory.

He finished with 13 carries for 17 yards

Neubauer was 4-of-4 for 48 yards and a touchdown toss to Austin Tagartt of 22-yards in the third quarter that put the Chieftains up 20-0.

South Haven responded in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns to cut the lead to 20-14.

Chris Herrera scored on a 14-yard pass from Devon Smiley, while Kendall Cunningham hauled in a 15-yard pass from Smiley.

Neubauer scored on a fourth-and-one play when it appeared that he had been stopped short. But he somehow got away from the Rams’ defenders and scored.

After turning the ball over numerous times in its opening loss to Vicksburg, the Chieftains had just one miscue against South Haven.

Dowagiac finished with 237 yards in total offense, including 189 yards on the ground.

Lazaro Piedra led the way with 71 yards on 13 carries and a 2-yard touchdown run.

Defensively, the Chieftains held the Rams t 74 yards in total offense.

Scott Hassle had five tackles to pace the defense.
